Make the Wrapping Part of the Gift: Drawstring Gift Bag Sewing Kit

Oct 13
3 min read

There’s something extra special about giving a gift in a bag you made yourself. The fabric, the ribbon, the little finishing touches—it all says, “I put a little heart into this.”

That’s the idea behind my Sweet Christmas Trio Drawstring Gift Bag Sewing Kit. It’s a cheerful project to enjoy yourself, a thoughtful gift for a friend who sews, and a lovely way to make your Christmas wrapping feel personal.

Christmas gift bag sewing kit contents: fabric for three lined drawstring bags, five yards of ribbon, thread, 10 quilting clips, two safety pins, a printed sewing pattern, and three bonus coordinating gift tags. Peppermint, pink Santa, and blue Christmas baking bags show finished project examples; finished bags are not included.

A Little Christmas Sewing, All Gathered Together

I chose three coordinating prints for this collection: colorful peppermint swirls, playful Santas on pink checks, and Christmas baking favorites on a soft blue background. Pink polka dot ribbon ties everything together.

The kit makes one small, one medium, and one large fully lined drawstring bag. Give all three away with gifts tucked inside, or keep a few for your own holiday wrapping. These bags can be enjoyed and reused long after the first present is opened.

What’s Inside the Drawstring Gift Bag Kit?

I’ve gathered the project supplies so you can spend more time enjoying the sewing:

  • Coordinating fabric for the outside and lining of all three bags

  • Five yards of pink grosgrain ribbon

  • One spool of thread

  • Ten quilting clips

  • Two safety pins for threading the ribbon

  • The printed sewing pattern with step-by-step photos and illustrated instructions

  • A free bonus: three coordinating Christmas gift tags

This is a physical sewing kit shipped to you, with the printed pattern included. You’ll do the sewing; the finished bags in the photos show what you can make.

Three Christmas gift tags included free with the Sweet Christmas Trio sewing kit: peppermint “Sweet Christmas wishes,” Santa “A little Christmas cheer,” and gingerbread “Something sweet for you.” Each has To and From lines and thin gold cord. The kit and coordinating finished bag examples appear behind them; finished bags are not included.

Gather Your Everyday Sewing Tools

You don’t need a fancy sewing setup for this project. A basic sewing machine that stitches a straight seam works beautifully.

Have these tools ready:

  • A basic sewing machine

  • Fabric scissors

  • A ruler

  • An iron

  • An ironing pad or ironing board

The included clips help hold your fabric together, and the safety pins make threading the ribbon through the casing easier. Pressing as you go helps your seams and finished edges look neat.

Three Sizes for Thoughtful Little Surprises

Each size gives you a different way to dress up a gift.

Bag size

Ideas to tuck inside

Small: 6″ × 8″

A small jewelry box, sewing notions, a gift card with a little treat, or another tiny treasure

Medium: 9″ × 12″

A paperback, small notebook, or a collection of smaller gifts

Large: 12″ × 16″

A folded T-shirt, cozy socks with other small gifts, or a soft gift bundle

These measurements are taken with the bags laid flat and open. Gift thickness takes up room, and you’ll need space at the top to gather the ribbon closure. The space below the casing is approximately 1½″ shorter than the full height, so check your gift’s measurements before choosing a bag.

Beginner Friendly—and Fun to Make

If you’re newer to sewing or coming back after a break, this is a lovely project to build confidence. You’ll practice sewing straight seams, pressing, and threading ribbon.

There are no zippers or buttonholes, and the photo instructions help you follow along. Once you’re comfortable with the steps, these bags make a satisfying, quick project to return to whenever you need pretty gift wrapping.

Sew one at a time for a relaxing little session, or work through the three bags together.

Gift the Drawstring Gift Bag Kit—or Make the Bags Yourself

Know someone who enjoys sewing? Give them the kit and let them enjoy choosing a quiet moment to create. It’s a thoughtful way to give both a project and something useful to make.

Or keep the kit for yourself! Sew the bags, fill them with carefully chosen surprises, and finish each one with a coordinating tag. A simple gift feels extra thoughtful when the wrapping becomes something the recipient can use again.

Keep Sewing with Your Fabric Stash

After making your Christmas trio, you can use the included pattern again with fabric from your stash.

Leftover yardage and larger scraps are wonderful for these bags, provided they’re big enough for the cutting measurements. Try florals for a birthday, a favorite color for a friend, or playful prints for a child’s gift. Mix fabrics for the outside and lining to make each bag feel special.

It’s a lovely way to turn fabric you already love into wrapping you’ll be excited to give.
